FILM FESTIVAL (1995)
1. The War in Europe
- Ophuls' The Sorrow & the Pity (1970) 2 Parts, 2hrs each.
Documentary about collaboration and resistance in the French town of Clermont-Ferrand.
- Ophuls' Hotel Terminus (1987) 2 Parts, 2hrs each. Documentary
about Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon".
- Lanzmann's Shoah (1985) 4 Parts, 2hrs 30, 1hr 57, 2hrs 22, 2hrs
20. Documentary about the Auschwitz death camp.
- Bertolucci's The Conformist (1971) 1hr 55. Film about a man
who works for the Italian fascist secret service and who is ordered to
commit a murder.
- Rossellini's Rome: Open City (1945) 1hr 45. The 1st film in
Rossellini's war trilogy set in Rome in 1943-44 about the liberation of
the city.
- Rossellini's Paisan (1946) 1 hr 55. The second film in Rossellini's
war trilogy is made up of 6 separate stories about the Allied invasion
of Italy.
- Rossellini's Germany: Year Zero (1947) 1hr 18. The final film
in Rossellini's war trilogy is about the struggles of a 12 year old boy
in occupied Berlin.
2. The War in Asia
- Kon Ichikawa's Fires on the Plain (1962) 1hr 45. The companion
film to The Burmese Harp (1956). It is set in the Philippines at
the close of the war when defeated Japanase soldiers resort to cannabalism
in order to survive.
- Masaki Kobayashi's The Human Condition (1958-61) Part 1: "No
Greater Love" 3hrs 15. The 1st part of the epic Japanese equvialent
of "War and Peace." It shows, through the eyes of Kaji, the treatment
of the Chinese in slave labour camps, the brutality of basic training in
the Imperial Army, the war against the Russians in Manchuria, the chaos
of defeat and the "return" of Kaji to his beloved.
- Alain Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) 1hr 28. A film about
the memory of war of 2 individuals, a French woman and a Japanese man.
As they have a brief affair in Hiroshima after the war, they try to make
sense of what happened to them and their societies.
- Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (1987) 2hrs 32. Based upon
the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard. A young boy in Shanghai is
captured by the Japanese when they invade China. The boy's response to
events is a mixture of confusion and exhiliration.
- Alan Dwan, The Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) 1hr 50. One of the mythic
films of WW2 heroism - the way the marines want to be remembered. It stars
John Wayne and the very flag which the marines erected at Iwo Jima. One
of JW''s best films and one of the few in which he dies (any connection?).
- John Ford's They Were Expendable (1945) 2hrs 15. After making
a documentary for the Navy ("Midway") and before making his cavalry
trilogy (1948, 1949, 1950) Ford made a grim film about the last days of
the American presence in the Philippines before the Japanese invasion.
Some were left behind because they were expendable.
- Bryan Forbes' King Rat (1965) 2hrs 13. Based upon the autobiographical
novel of James Clavell. In a Japanese POW camp an American uses his entrepreneurial
skills to buy and sell his way to the position of "King Rat"
in the camp. Shows the economy of a POW camp.
- David Lean's Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 2hrs 41. A classic
POW film which deals with the fanaticism of men on both sides to build
the Burma railway.
