This is a translation of the various versions of Bastiat's essay "L'État" which appeared between 1848-49. It contains the three versions in both French and English with an introduction and notes. The longest and definitive version was the one which appeared as a pamphlet in 1849: L’État. Maudit Argent. Par M. Frédéric Bastiat, Représentant du Peuple.
