Editor's Note: John Trenchard (1662-1723) and Thomas Gordon (1691-1750) edited and wrote for two important magazines in the 1720s: The Independent Whig (1720-21) and Cato's Letters (1720-23). Here we have a list of 54 essays from the first magazine in a sortable table format [HTML]. (After Trenchard's death Gordon would add more in 2 additional volumes - see The Collected Independent Whig (1720-1747) in [HTML].) See also the collected Letters from the second magazine Cato's Letters (144 letters) in [HTML] and our anthology of material selected from both magazines Letters on Liberty and Power (64 items) in [HTML].

John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, Letters on Liberty and Power: An Anthology of Essays from The Independent Whig (1720-21) and Cato's Letters (1720-23). Edited by David M. Hart (The Pittwater Free Press, 2025).
Editor's Note: This is an updated version of the collection of tracts and letters by Trenchard and Gordon called The English Libertarian Heritage. From the Writings of John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon in The Independent Whig and Cato's Letters. Edited By David L. Jacobson (Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1965). It contained his introduction, 7 essays from The Independent Whig and 35 from Cato's Letters, some of which were abbreviated. My collection is larger, contains the full essay or letter, has the original page numbering, and has the citation tool. It contains 64 essays in total: 5 miscellaneous essays; 15 essays from The Independent Whig (1720-21); and 44 essays from Cato's Letters (1720-23).
